The ChatGPT-powered audio gadget from OpenAI is expected to make its debut in the second half of 2026, according to industry tipsters and emerging reports. This would mark OpenAI’s first major consumer hardware product, expanding its footprint beyond software and AI services.
Sources claim the upcoming device, internally codenamed “Sweatpea,” will be an innovative audio-based gadget designed to integrate ChatGPT directly into everyday use. While OpenAI has not officially revealed the device’s final design or complete feature set, insiders suggest it will focus on voice interaction, allowing users to perform small tasks, ask questions, and receive thoughtful responses seamlessly through audio commands.
The release timeline was indirectly confirmed by Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, during discussions at the World Economic Forum held at Axios House in Davos, Switzerland. Lehane revealed that 2026 will be a significant year for OpenAI’s hardware ambitions, with plans to introduce multiple devices, though details on pre-registration schedules are still being finalised.
Speculation around the product intensified following OpenAI’s strategic partnership with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief designer, in 2024, and the acquisition of his startup in 2025. These moves strongly suggest OpenAI is aiming for a premium, design-focused AI device that blends advanced technology with user-friendly aesthetics.
According to leaks, the ChatGPT-powered audio gadget could rival wireless earbuds like AirPods. Reported design concepts include an egg-shaped charging case and pill-shaped audio units that rest behind the ear. Some sources also claim the device may be powered by a 2-nanometre Exynos chip from Samsung, with manufacturing handled by Foxconn, known for producing flagship smartphones.
Interestingly, OpenAI is also said to be exploring alternative designs, including a pen-shaped audio device, showing the company’s willingness to experiment with multiple form factors before finalising its flagship release.
