US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will meet New York City Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday. This will be the first face to face meeting between the two political rivals, who have openly criticised each other throughout the recent election cycle. Trump publicly supported Mamdani’s opponent Andrew Cuomo, while Mamdani frequently challenged Trump’s policies on immigration, protest crackdowns, and US support for Israel during the Gaza war.
Trump announced the meeting through social media, stating that both sides have agreed to hold discussions at the Oval Office on November 21st. The Mayor elect’s team had already reached out to the White House earlier in the week, with Mamdani saying he was fulfilling a commitment made to New Yorkers during his campaign.
Mamdani’s transition office has not yet commented on Trump’s latest statement, but the scheduled meeting marks a significant moment in a tense political relationship. During the New York City mayoral race, Trump repeatedly used federal pressure, even threatening to withhold billions in funding if Mamdani won the election.
Despite these threats, Mamdani built a successful campaign largely focused on protecting immigrant communities and resisting federal policies that he said harmed New Yorkers. He will officially take office on January 1, 2026, stepping into one of the most influential municipal leadership roles in the United States.
