On Tuesday, the opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Aiin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) staged a protest outside Parliament House as part of its ongoing nationwide movement against the recently passed 27th Amendment.

The 27th Amendment was signed into law on November 13, after being approved by Parliament, despite strong opposition criticism. The legislation, which introduces significant changes to the judiciary and military, has faced backlash from the legal community, including former and sitting judges, who view it as an “attack” on judicial independence.

In a meeting last Friday, the TTAP had pledged to mount a vigorous protest to “restore the Constitution to its original form.” Following that promise, members of the coalition gathered outside Parliament House for the protest.

Images and videos shared by TTAP on social media platform X showed protesters holding signs with slogans like “Death to dictatorship, long live democracy,” “27th Amendment rejected,” and “Subjugation of the judiciary is the public’s subjugation.”

The protestors also plan to march from Parliament House to the Supreme Court in opposition to the 27th Amendment.

Key figures at the protest included TTAP leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) chief and TTAP Vice-Chairman Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.

On Monday, PTI Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) also staged a walk from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross on The Mall to protest against the 27th Amendment’s passage.

Earlier last week, TTAP announced plans to present a resolution in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly opposing the 27th Amendment.

Formed in April of last year, TTAP is a coalition of six opposition parties, including PTI. In July, it formalized its organizational structure and expressed its support for all anti-government protests.
