The Balochistan Assembly has passed a significant new law aimed at ending child marriages across the province. The legislation sets the minimum marriage age at 18 and seeks to ensure that no minor is forced or allowed to enter into a marital relationship.

This move comes in response to rising concerns about children’s safety, rights, and wellbeing, particularly the vulnerability of young girls who are often pushed into early marriages.

Under the new law, anyone who attempts to marry a person below the age of 18 will face strict consequences. The punishment includes imprisonment for two to three years, along with a fine between Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 200,000.

The legislation also targets those who assist or facilitate such marriages. Family members, community elders, or anyone involved in arranging, promoting, or supporting these unions will face the same legal penalties.

To strengthen the enforcement process, the bill outlines specific duties for nikah registrars and union council secretaries. Before registering any marriage, they are required to thoroughly check and verify the CNICs of both individuals to confirm their legal age.

Failure to follow these verification steps — or any negligence in the process — may also result in imprisonment and fines. This added accountability helps reinforce the protection of minors.

The approval of this law marks a major milestone for children’s rights in Balochistan. It sends a strong message that child marriage is a criminal offence and will be treated seriously. The goal is to ensure a safe, healthy, and secure future for all children in the province.
