The United Nations has revealed that nations across Europe, the Arab world, Canada, and the United States are preparing to contribute to a $70 billion reconstruction plan for Gaza. This initiative comes in response to the devastating two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, which left the region in ruins and millions in desperate need of assistance.

According to Jaco Cilliers, a representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the war generated nearly 55 million tons of rubble—about 13 times more than the weight of the Great Pyramids of Giza. Clearing this vast amount of debris and rebuilding the city will take years, if not decades, due to the severe destruction and limited access to construction materials.

The UN reports that approximately 83% of Gaza City’s infrastructure—including homes, hospitals, and schools—has been either damaged or completely destroyed. So far, only about 81,000 tons of debris have been cleared, highlighting the enormous scale of the task ahead.

International donors are actively working to coordinate funding strategies and ensure that aid directly reaches the affected people. Priority areas include rebuilding homes, hospitals, power systems, and schools, along with restoring essential services and creating jobs.

The UN emphasizes that while financial aid is vital, lasting peace and stability remain the key to Gaza’s long-term recovery. Without peace, even global efforts may fall short of rebuilding a sustainable future for the region.
