Karachi Records 129mm Rainfall, City Flooded and Evacuations Underway

Karachi was left paralyzed after 129mm of continuous rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday flooded large parts of the city. The relentless downpour caused storm drains and streams to overflow, pushing water into residential areas and severely disrupting daily life in Pakistan’s largest port city.

Entire neighborhoods were submerged, trapping residents inside their homes. Major roads turned into rivers, with vehicles stranded in waist-deep water. Long traffic jams forced commuters to either abandon their cars or wait for hours. Many shops, businesses, and schools shut down, with schools announcing emergency holidays to ensure student safety.

The city administration initiated rescue and relief operations, evacuating over 200 people from low-lying areas. Families most affected by flooding were provided assistance, while teams worked tirelessly overnight to drain water. However, the sheer volume of rainfall slowed progress, and in several areas, electricity was cut off to prevent accidents, further complicating the situation.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the monsoon spell may continue for another 24 hours. Forecasts predict temperatures between 27°C and 29°C, with humidity levels reaching 92 percent. The PMD also warned of a depression west of Karachi that could drive more rain clouds toward the city, sparking fears of additional heavy showers.

Citizens have voiced frustration over the recurring chaos, urging authorities to develop stronger drainage systems and emergency response plans. Every year, heavy rains bring life in Karachi to a standstill, highlighting the urgent need for long-term urban planning solutions.

For now, families remain on alert, preparing for possible further rainfall while waiting for the situation to stabilize.
