Young Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been released from the national squad for the remaining matches of the ongoing ODI tri-series. The decision allows him to return to domestic cricket and focus on improving his batting form and confidence.
The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the move on Monday. According to the official statement, Saim himself requested the release after a conversation with head coach Mike Hesson. The team management and national selection committee respected his honest self-assessment and approved the request.
Sahibzada Farhan has been named as Saim’s replacement for the rest of the tournament. Farhan is currently in Kathmandu playing in the Nepal Premier League. Sources confirmed he will take the first available flight back to Pakistan to join the national team as soon as possible.
Pakistan have already secured their place in the tri-series final after winning three matches in a row. Their next fixture is against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, October 27, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The final will follow once the remaining league matches are completed.
Saim’s recent performances have been underwhelming. In Sunday’s thrilling one-wicket victory over England, he managed only six runs before being dismissed by debutant Henry Crocombe. That low score continued a difficult run with the bat in the series, prompting his request to step away and work on his game at the domestic level.
The move shows a mature approach from both the player and the board. Instead of forcing a struggling batsman to continue, the management has given him space to rebuild his confidence away from the international spotlight. Domestic cricket will offer him more match time and a lower-pressure environment to refine his technique and regain form.
Farhan’s inclusion brings a different option at the top of the order. The experienced opener will have limited time to settle in, but his domestic record and previous international appearances make him a ready replacement. Team officials hope the change will keep the batting unit balanced as Pakistan prepare for the final stages of the tri-series.
With qualification already sealed, the focus now shifts to maintaining momentum against Sri Lanka and then performing strongly in the final. Saim’s temporary exit is a reminder that form can fluctuate even for talented young players, and taking a step back at the right time can help long-term growth. Fans will now watch how Farhan settles into the side while hoping Saim returns stronger in the near future.
