PPP stalls NA proceedings and pushes the government to drop a packed list of laws. Tuesday’s sitting of the National Assembly turned extraordinary when 43 MNAs stood up one by one on points of order. The Pakistan Peoples Party, a key partner in the ruling alliance, refused to let any official work move forward until its concerns are settled.

The house, which normally opens at 11 am, only began after 2 pm. Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq tried to start the day’s business but could not. The agenda contained 62 items and 21 bills. The moment he called for a standing-committee report, PPP chief whip Syed Naveed Qamar walked straight to the speaker’s chair and demanded that no legislative work continue.

A source close to the PPP said the party will keep the same pressure for the rest of the session. No bill or report will be allowed until the government answers the party’s complaints. PPP benches looked deliberately empty, making it clear the party will not give the numbers needed for any constitutional change.

Opposition lawmakers also asked for a full three-day debate on the growing threat of terrorism. The government offered a detailed discussion on the National Action Plan in return. Still the PPP did not soften its stand. The session was later adjourned until 2:30 pm the next day so the government could try quiet talks to calm its ally.

Without PPP support the PML-N cannot reach the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments. Some insiders worry a sensitive bill may be brought soon, yet it cannot pass while the PPP remains firm. For now the National Assembly floor has become a place of political bargaining instead of law-making, and the long list of bills stays untouched.
