In Punjab’s Muridke district, floodwaters from the River Ravi turned vast stretches of farmland into temporary lakes. Residents described being trapped for days without electricity, clean drinking water or food supplies. One local woman, Iqra Salman, said her family had been waiting four days for any official rescue team while remaining completely surrounded by water. Volunteer groups stepped in to fill the gap, operating small motor boats to ferry people and their remaining belongings to higher ground.
Even after reaching safer locations, many families faced harsh conditions. They slept in makeshift tents under humid heat, positioned between the expanding floodwater and nearby roads. Muhammad Ramzan, whose house collapsed after water rushed in during the early morning hours, explained that the family had no time to salvage any possessions. He said they had lost everything and were left with nothing.
Volunteer rescuers reported deploying four boats to evacuate people from around a dozen affected villages. Large areas of residential zones remained submerged, forcing communities to abandon homes that had been rapidly overtaken by the rising water. Officials continue to monitor the situation as additional rainfall is expected in parts of the country.
Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to the intensifying effects of climate change. While the seasonal monsoon is vital for agriculture, changing weather patterns have made rainfall more extreme and unpredictable. The 2022 floods, widely described as exceptionally severe, killed around 1,700 people and submerged enormous areas of the country, serving as a stark reminder of the risks.
Similar challenges are being reported across the border in Afghanistan, where flash floods and heavy rains recently caused dozens of deaths and left many people missing. Authorities in both nations face the ongoing task of strengthening preparedness and response systems as monsoon activity continues.
