The International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested an explanation from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after the board shared a video of Ben Stokes announcing his retirement from international cricket before the conclusion of England’s third Test against New Zealand. According to reports published in the English media, the ICC believes the release of the footage may have breached its regulations regarding recording inside restricted team areas during international matches.

The controversy began when the ECB uploaded a video on social media showing Ben Stokes informing his teammates of his decision to retire from international cricket. The clip was released on the fourth day of the deciding Test, while the match was still in progress. The ICC reportedly considers this a possible violation of its Players’ and Match Officials’ Areas (PMOA) minimum standards.

Under Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA regulations, national cricket boards are not permitted to install fixed or temporary cameras or other recording equipment inside team dressing rooms for broadcasting video or audio content. The ICC maintains that the ECB’s decision to record and publish both video and audio from the dressing room before the match had officially ended was not in line with these standards.

Reports suggest that the ICC sent a formal letter to the ECB on Saturday seeking clarification over the incident. The governing body also reminded the English board that any footage captured within the protected player areas should not include audio or be released until after the conclusion of the match.

Speaking after the fourth day’s play, Ben Stokes explained that the timing of the announcement had been carefully planned. He revealed that the decision was coordinated with his representatives and ECB officials to ensure the news was shared in a controlled manner. According to Stokes, discussions with his management team led to the strategy of releasing the announcement during the ongoing Test.

The ICC is now awaiting the ECB’s response before deciding whether any further action is necessary. The incident has sparked debate over media access, player privacy, and the enforcement of broadcasting regulations during international cricket matches.
