The long awaited Multan Lodhran Road dualisation project has finally received official approval, bringing much needed relief to thousands of daily commuters and transporters. The National Highway Authority (NHA) has approved Rs4.6 billion for the reconstruction and dualisation of the 62 kilometre road, with construction work expected to begin within the next month.
The approval came after a formal request by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, who has consistently pushed for infrastructure development in South Punjab. The project has also received final approval from Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and will be fully financed through the Road Maintenance Account Fund.
According to official details, the project is expected to be completed within one year. Besides constructing a dual carriageway, the plan also includes raising 44.8 kilometres of the existing road to create a uniform level between both carriageways. This improvement will significantly enhance road safety, provide smoother traffic flow, and reduce travel time for motorists.
For years, the Multan Lodhran Road has remained in poor condition, creating serious challenges for local residents, commercial transporters, and travelers. Damaged road surfaces, traffic congestion, and safety concerns have made the highway one of the region’s most problematic routes. The upcoming reconstruction is expected to improve transportation, support regional trade, and strengthen economic activity across the area.
Speaking on the development, Yousaf Raza Gilani expressed satisfaction that a long standing commitment to the people of Multan and Lodhran was finally becoming a reality. He stated that the upgraded highway would provide safer, faster, and higher quality travel facilities while contributing to the overall development of South Punjab. He also reaffirmed his commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges through sustainable development projects that improve the quality of life for local communities.
It is worth noting that an earlier contract worth Rs6.86 billion was awarded to Ningxia Communication Construction in 2021. However, the company was disqualified by the NHA in 2023 after failing to complete the project, leading to delays before the latest approval and funding were granted.
