Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored a stunning injury time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles. The dramatic finish sent Canadian fans into celebration as the co-hosts advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history.

The match remained tense from the opening whistle, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. Canada controlled possession for long periods but found it difficult to break through South Africa’s disciplined defensive setup. Just before halftime, Moise Bombito came close with a powerful header that was cleared off the goal line before Tajon Buchanan forced a brilliant save from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Canada also appealed for a penalty after Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area. However, following a VAR review, the referee decided not to award the spot kick, leaving the home supporters frustrated.

The second half followed a similar pattern as Canada continued pressing while South Africa remained compact in defense. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi both threatened, but South Africa’s defenders produced crucial clearances to keep the match scoreless.

Just when extra time appeared inevitable, Stephen Eustaquio stepped up in the 92nd minute. Receiving the ball outside the penalty area, he unleashed a powerful strike that flew past the diving goalkeeper and into the net, giving Canada a historic victory.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players for their determination and fighting spirit, describing them as Canadian heroes after reaching the last 16. The co-hosts will now face either Netherlands or Morocco in the next round as they continue their dream World Cup campaign.

Although South Africa exited the tournament, they made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. Veteran coach Hugo Broos also hinted that this could be his final World Cup after an impressive career spanning more than five decades.
