The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced a major overhaul of its central contracts system, shifting to a format based structure aimed at modernising player management and improving long term performance across all formats. This new approach replaces the traditional A, B, C and D grading system with a more role specific model that clearly defines responsibilities for each player.
According to Pakistan Cricket Board, the updated framework is built around five performance tracks. The highest level, known as Track AB, is reserved for dual format players who represent both Test and ODI cricket. Track A is dedicated to Test specialists, ensuring red ball cricket gets focused attention and protection. Track BC combines ODI and T20 players into one group, while Track C is designed for T20 franchise focused players. Track D serves as a development pathway for emerging cricketers connected to the National Cricket Academy system.
Officials explained that each track will include internal tiers, allowing players to move up or down based on form, fitness, and performance. The system also introduces a structured evaluation process involving medical assessments, mandatory domestic participation, and detailed performance analysis. The PCB said the goal is to strengthen accountability while ensuring Test cricket sustainability in the era of franchise leagues.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the new central contracts model offers greater clarity and transparency for players. He emphasized that selection and contract decisions will now be based on defined roles and performance expectations rather than broad categories.
Naqvi also addressed recent media speculation about coaching and mentoring appointments involving former cricketers such as Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez. He stated that several reports were published before official confirmation, leading to confusion. He reiterated that the board is actively working to involve experienced cricket figures to strengthen team structure and long term planning.
The PCB believes this restructuring will create a more balanced system that supports both international commitments and franchise opportunities while maintaining the integrity of Pakistan cricket across all formats.
