A tragic explosion at a rocket propellant production facility operated by Hanwha Aerospace in Daejeon, South Korea, claimed the lives of five workers and left two others injured on Monday. The incident occurred at a production line responsible for manufacturing rocket propellants, raising concerns about industrial safety within the country’s aerospace and defense sector.

According to emergency officials, the explosion triggered a fire that quickly spread through part of the facility. The two surviving workers managed to escape on their own before rescue teams arrived. One of the survivors suffered severe burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities reported that identifying the victims may take time because the bodies were badly damaged in the blast. Investigators have begun examining the site to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial information suggests the explosion may have occurred while workers were using water to clean equipment containing explosive materials used in rocket propellant manufacturing. However, officials emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.

Following the incident, Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il issued a public apology to the victims’ families and pledged full cooperation with government authorities. The company stated that all five deceased workers were Hanwha employees, including two temporary workers in their twenties.

The accident also affected investor confidence, with shares of Hanwha Aerospace and its parent company Hanwha Corp declining during trading hours after news of the explosion spread.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung instructed authorities to deploy all available resources to support rescue and recovery efforts while ensuring a thorough investigation into the cause of the tragedy.

Hanwha Aerospace is one of South Korea’s leading defense and aerospace companies, producing advanced propulsion systems and handling rocket propellant operations. The incident has renewed discussions about workplace safety standards in high-risk industrial environments and the importance of strict safety protocols when dealing with explosive materials.
