Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has made headlines by recalling veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to Germany’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The experienced Bayern Munich star had retired from international football in 2024, but he is now set to represent Germany in the tournament for a remarkable fifth time.

Nagelsmann confirmed that Neuer will return as Germany’s first choice goalkeeper, ahead of Oliver Baumann. The coach praised the 40 year old goalkeeper for his leadership, experience, and influence inside the dressing room. Despite Neuer’s return, Joshua Kimmich will continue serving as Germany’s captain during the competition.

Neuer remains the only player in the current squad who was part of Germany’s victorious 2014 FIFA World Cup team. Since lifting the trophy in Brazil, Germany have struggled badly in major tournaments. The national side suffered shocking group stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and have failed to make a major impact in recent European Championships.

The squad also welcomes back talented midfielder Jamal Musiala after recovering from injury. Players such as Kai Havertz, Leroy Sane, and Florian Wirtz are expected to lead Germany’s attacking line during the tournament.

Young Bayern Munich talent Lennart Karl received his first ever call up to a major international competition, showing Germany’s focus on developing future stars alongside experienced players like Neuer.

Germany will play one final warm up match against Finland before traveling to North America for the World Cup. They are placed in Group C alongside Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.

Fans are hopeful that the return of Manuel Neuer can help Germany regain their winning mentality and compete strongly for another World Cup title.
