After nearly 21 hours of intense negotiations, the United States and Iran failed to reach a final agreement during high level talks held in Islamabad. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that despite detailed discussions, both sides remained divided on critical issues, especially Iran’s long term nuclear plans.

Vance acknowledged that the talks included several serious and meaningful exchanges, but ultimately no deal could be finalized. He emphasized that the core disagreement revolved around whether Iran is willing to make a permanent commitment to avoid developing nuclear weapons or the capabilities required to build them quickly.

The Vice President also took a moment to appreciate Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir, for their efforts in hosting and facilitating the dialogue. He stated clearly that the failure was not due to Pakistan, praising their attempts to help both sides find common ground.

According to Vance, the US had clearly outlined its terms, red lines, and areas of flexibility, but Iran chose not to accept them. He stressed that Washington is seeking a long lasting assurance, not just a short term promise, regarding Iran’s nuclear intentions.

The discussions also touched on frozen Iranian assets and other related concerns, but these topics did not lead to a breakthrough. Vance added that the US entered the talks in good faith, following guidance from President Donald Trump, and remained flexible and cooperative throughout the process.

Despite the outcome, the US has now presented what it calls its “final and best offer”, leaving the decision in Iran’s hands. Vance concluded by stating that the lack of an agreement is more damaging for Iran than for the United States, signaling potential future pressure if no deal is reached.
