The UK government has announced new travel rules that could prevent British dual nationals from entering the country if they do not carry a British passport or the correct documentation. The changes will officially take effect from 25 February 2026, marking a major shift in how visitors are screened before arrival.

Under the new system, anyone travelling to the UK without a British passport must hold either a visa, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), or a certificate of entitlement. Without one of these documents, travellers may be refused boarding on flights, ferries, or trains before even reaching the UK border.

The announcement was made in London, where officials confirmed that visitors from 85 visa free countries, including the United States, Canada, and France, will now require an ETA to legally travel to the UK. This applies even to passengers transiting through UK passport control.

The government described the move as a key step in digitising the immigration system, aiming to create a contactless UK border in the future. Since the ETA system was introduced in 2023, more than 13.3 million travellers have successfully applied, allowing for faster and smoother entry into the country.

According to Mike Tapp, the ETA system improves national security by allowing authorities to identify potential risks before arrival. He added that the digital process also benefits travellers by reducing delays and paperwork.

Applying for an ETA is done through the official UK ETA app, costs £16, and usually provides a decision within minutes. However, travellers are advised to apply at least three working days in advance in case further checks are required.

British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, are exempt from the ETA requirement. However, the Home Office strongly urges dual British citizens to travel with a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. Without it, airlines and carriers cannot verify citizenship, which may result in delayed travel or denied boarding.

Officials say public awareness campaigns about the ETA have been ongoing since 2023 to ensure travellers are prepared.
