Timothée Chalamet’s night at the 98th Academy Awards was expected to be a career-defining victory, but instead turned into a disappointing setback.

Despite winning major awards like the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards for his role in Marty Supreme, the 30-year-old actor lost the Best Actor Oscar to Michael B. Jordan for Sinners.

This marks Chalamet’s third Oscar loss, following earlier defeats for Call Me By Your Name (2018) and A Complete Unknown (2025).

The disappointment was intensified by the tone of the evening. Host Conan O’Brien opened the show with jokes about Chalamet’s controversial remarks, calling ballet and opera “dying arts.”

O’Brien even joked that security was on alert from backlash by the opera and ballet communities. While Chalamet appeared to take it lightly, the comments reflected a growing perception that his mix of seriousness and Gen Z-style irony may be alienating Academy voters.

According to insiders speaking to Page Six, Chalamet’s promotional strategy, including adopting a cocky persona similar to his character and engaging in unconventional marketing stunts, may have backfired on him.

One source described him as “reeking of Oscar desperation,” while another suggested the loss should lead to serious self-reflection.

Opinions within the industry remain divided. Some believe Chalamet delivered a stronger performance than Jordan, but admit that Jordan’s image as a “likeable personality” and his emotional acceptance speech likely influenced voters.

Others view the loss as a reaction against Chalamet’s aggressive campaigning style.

One insider remarked that after three nominations and three losses, it may be time for the actor to reconsider his approach.

Looking ahead, awards analyst Debra Birnbaum of Gold Derby predicts a shift in strategy. With Dune: Part Three coming up — an ensemble film less centered on Chalamet alone — he may adopt a “less is more” approach.

She also noted that the Academy often rewards patience, suggesting that waiting for the right moment may be more effective than relentless campaigning.

For now, Chalamet remains one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, with strong appeal among younger audiences.

However, after three Oscar nominations and no wins, the question remains whether this setback will humble him or push him to continue chasing the Oscar with the same intensity that has both driven his success and shaped his reputation.
