Sri Lanka has announced enhanced security arrangements for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with special focus on high-profile matches involving India and Pakistan. Officials confirmed that elite commando units, normally tasked with protecting visiting heads of state, will be deployed to ensure the safety of all participating teams during the tournament.

The island nation is co-hosting the T20 World Cup alongside India and will stage 20 matches between February 7 and March 8. One of the most anticipated fixtures is the India-Pakistan match, scheduled to take place in Colombo on February 15. Given the history of political tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, Sri Lankan authorities are treating the fixture as a top priority.

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said Sri Lanka has given the highest level of importance to tournament security and is paying close attention to matches that may attract heightened attention. According to police officials, teams will be provided armed protection from the moment they leave the airport until their departure, ensuring a tightly controlled security environment.

The International Cricket Council relocated Pakistan’s matches to Sri Lanka after Pakistan refused to play in India due to political concerns. Bangladesh also requested a similar move, citing security fears, but the request was rejected. As a result, Scotland replaced Bangladesh in the competition. Pakistan has since suggested it could boycott the tournament in solidarity, although no final decision has been announced.

Sri Lanka has chosen to remain neutral amid regional disputes. Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake stated that the country does not wish to be drawn into political disagreements and considers all regional teams as friendly nations. He added that Sri Lanka remains open to hosting future international tournaments if requested.

Beyond security, Sri Lanka is also using the T20 World Cup to upgrade its cricket infrastructure. New floodlights have been installed at the Singhalese Sports Club in Colombo, while Pallekele Stadium in Kandy remains fully operational despite recent severe weather in the region.

Officials believe the combination of strong security planning and upgraded venues will help deliver a smooth and successful tournament for players and fans alike.
