Shan Masood will continue to captain Pakistan’s Test cricket team for the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, despite the team’s disappointing finish at the bottom in the previous edition.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the decision after a meeting between Shan Masood, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, and red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood. The board expressed its full confidence in Masood’s leadership, stating that both he and Mahmood will have complete freedom to shape the direction of the red-ball team.

Although Shan Masood’s central contract was recently downgraded, he remains Pakistan’s longest-serving active Test captain. While his record as captain has faced criticism, his individual batting performances have shown steady improvement, solidifying his position at the helm.

Pakistan’s new WTC campaign will begin with a tough home series against reigning champions South Africa. This two-Test challenge will be the first big test for Masood’s leadership in the new cycle.

The PCB’s decision highlights its commitment to providing stability and continuity. By backing Shan Masood and giving him more time, the board aims to build a more competitive and consistent Test side under the guidance of Azhar Mahmood.
