The Central Ruet e Hilal Committee is set to meet in Peshawar today for the important task of the Ramadan 2026 moon sighting. Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad will preside over the session, which is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm at the Auqaf Hall. Alongside the central body, zonal committees will also hold meetings in Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, and Islamabad to gather testimonies and coordinate observations from across the country.
Speaking on a television programme, Maulana Azad expressed hope that the announcement of Ramadan would remain unified across Pakistan, as has been the case in recent years. He emphasized the importance of collective decision making and cooperation among institutions to ensure accuracy and national harmony.
Several scientific bodies are supporting the committee in this process, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and Suparco. According to Suparco, the crescent moon is likely to be visible this evening. At sunset, the moon’s age is expected to be approximately 25 hours and 48 minutes, while coastal regions may experience nearly 59 minutes between sunset and moonset, increasing the possibility of a clear sighting. If confirmed, the first fast will be observed on February 19.
Globally, some Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait have already begun fasting after sighting the moon. Meanwhile, several Asian countries reported no sighting earlier.
In preparation for the holy month, the government has announced a Rs38 billion Ramadan package, benefiting over 12 million families through digital transfers of Rs13,000 each. Additionally, the Power Division has directed electricity distribution companies to ensure uninterrupted supply during Sehr and Iftar, with strict instructions to avoid unannounced load shedding.
Ramadan remains a time of spiritual devotion, patience, and unity for Muslims across the world.
