Floodwaters breach near Qadirpur Gas Field causing production halt at 10 wells

In Ghotki district of Sindh, floodwater from the Indus River has surged into the Qadirpur Gas Field, causing serious damage to critical infrastructure and suspending production in several wells, officials report.According to the Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), ten wells have been affected over the past two days. The floodwaters have reached the platforms of these wells, entering the ERW (Emergency Response Well) system in Block-VI, and have damaged protective plates around the wells. The region known as the Katcha area—river-adjacent, flood-prone land—has been especially hard hit. Several villages have been submerged, and erosion caused by the swollen Indus has undermined protections that usually shield the gas infrastructure.A key concern is the ERW platform, which survived the devastating 2010 super floods without damage. This time, however, the same platform has suffered damage, raising fears about the durability of flood defenses in this and future flood events.Because of this damage, gas production from those ten wells has been suspended for the past two days. Regional Coordinator Sukkur has confirmed that the halt in production reflects both safety concerns and the need to assess structural damage before restoring operations. The Qadirpur Gas Field is one of Pakistan’s major gas reserves, playing a key role in meeting energy demands. Any disruption in its output has implications for overall gas supply in Sindh and beyond.Repair efforts cannot begin until water levels recede, according to OGDCL officials. Meanwhile, emergency response teams are being deployed to monitor further erosion, safeguard remaining infrastructure, and prepare for restoration once conditions allow. This incident underlines the growing risk that extreme weather and flooding pose to energy infrastructure in Pakistan—particularly in low-lying, river-adjacent areas. The damage arising from this episode may force authorities to re-evaluate existing protections, emergency preparedness, and long-term investment in flood resilience for critical facilities.
