The recent Punjab government jet purchase has ignited a heated political debate, with opposition parties questioning the necessity of acquiring a luxury aircraft. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan has strongly defended the move, stating that the jet is an official asset of the provincial government and not a personal possession of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz or any political party.
Speaking during a Senate session, Sanaullah dismissed criticism as political propaganda. He emphasized that Punjab is the largest province in Pakistan, with substantial financial resources to invest in long term infrastructure and official assets. According to him, the newly acquired jet replaces an aging aircraft that had been in service for over 25 years and is expected to serve the province for the next three to four decades.
The controversy revolves around the procurement of a Gulfstream business jet reportedly worth between 38 to 42 million dollars, approximately Rs11 billion. Opposition party Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf has alleged that the aircraft will be used exclusively for the chief minister’s personal travel. These claims have intensified political tensions and fueled public debate.
However, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari clarified that the jet is part of a broader initiative to establish an official fleet under the banner of Air Punjab. She explained that the provincial government plans to acquire multiple aircraft, some through direct purchase and others through leasing arrangements. The aim, according to the government, is to modernize provincial air transport facilities for official use.
Supporters argue that the Punjab government jet purchase is a strategic investment, while critics view it as an unnecessary luxury during challenging economic times. The issue continues to dominate political discussions across the country.
