The Punjab government has taken a major step toward environmental innovation with the launch of an AI-based monitoring and forecasting system to combat smog and air pollution. Announced by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, the initiative aims to predict pollution levels up to four months in advance, allowing authorities to take timely preventive measures to protect public health.
Developed in collaboration with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), the system uses drone surveillance, real-time monitoring, and data analytics to identify pollution sources and enforce environmental laws. Integration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) control room ensures immediate action against violators.
The AI system is expected to revolutionize how Punjab manages smog by providing accurate forecasts, enabling stricter industrial regulations, traffic control, and public awareness campaigns. Officials believe this marks a significant step toward a cleaner, healthier Punjab.
Minister Aurangzeb highlighted that technology-driven governance is essential to improve air quality year-round. The insights generated by the system will also guide future policy-making, helping the province set an example for other regions in sustainable development and climate resilience.
This initiative reflects Punjab’s strong commitment to fighting climate change, promoting innovation, and protecting citizens from environmental hazards.
