Pakistan T20 failures as players discuss strategy during the T20 World Cup match

Pakistan’s disappointing campaign at the T20 World Cup came to a quiet end in Kandy, as the team failed to qualify for the semi finals and exposed serious structural weaknesses in their approach to modern T20 cricket. From questionable captaincy to slow batting rates and ineffective all rounders, Pakistan were clearly outpaced by elite sides.

Captain Salman Agha faced heavy criticism for tactical errors and his suitability for the shortest format. Former wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal openly stated that Pakistan lag far behind top teams such as India, West Indies, South Africa and England.

According to Akmal, while other nations have evolved with aggressive intent and smart game awareness, Pakistan continues to struggle with outdated strategies. He noted that the team often beats weaker opponents but collapses under pressure against stronger sides.

Pakistan entered the tournament with confidence after a 3 0 series sweep against Australia, and their spin heavy attack looked well suited for Sri Lanka conditions. However, early warning signs appeared when Pakistan narrowly defeated Netherlands, relying on a late cameo by Faheem Ashraf.

The crucial match against India proved disastrous. Agha’s decision to bowl first backfired as Pakistan conceded 175 runs. His delayed use of key spinner Usman Tariq allowed Ishan Kishan to dominate the innings.

Similar mistakes followed against England, where captain Harry Brook capitalized on weak bowling changes to score a match winning century. Former player Basit Ali labeled the leadership as poor under pressure.

The persistence with an out of form Babar Azam further disrupted Pakistan’s batting rhythm. Dropped only in the final match, Pakistan finally crossed 200 runs, but it was too late as New Zealand advanced on net run rate.

Fans expressed deep anger and frustration, believing the system resists meaningful change. The campaign ended not just in defeat, but with urgent questions about Pakistan’s future in modern T20 cricket.
