New Zealand and Iran players lined up before their World Cup opener, symbolizing football unity amid geopolitical tensions

New Zealand’s national football team has expressed its willingness to play Iran outside the United States in their 2026 World Cup opener, as uncertainty looms over the fixture due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Originally scheduled for June 15 in Los Angeles, the match is part of Iran’s group-stage commitments. However, the Iranian Football Federation has threatened to boycott games on US soil, citing political unrest stemming from the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Despite the ambiguity, New Zealand players remain flexible. Midfielder Ryan Thomas, based in the Netherlands, emphasized that Iran had rightfully qualified and deserved to compete. “If we have to play in Mexico or Canada, that’s fine. It’s not a big deal,” he said.

The All Whites are currently based in San Diego, close to the Mexican border, making a venue change logistically feasible. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has already expressed openness to hosting Iran’s matches, though the final decision rests with FIFA.

Kosta Barbarouses, a seasoned winger from Australia, echoed the sentiment, saying a venue switch wouldn’t disrupt New Zealand’s preparations. “We’ve got a base before our first game. I don’t see why not,” he stated.

Security concerns have also surfaced, especially for the Los Angeles match, but Barbarouses, a father of two, said he trusted authorities to ensure safety for players and families. “I’d love to have my family there. I’d feel safe,” he added.

Iran is also scheduled to face Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle. FIFA has yet to comment on any venue changes but confirmed ongoing discussions with Iran’s federation.

Thomas acknowledged the nerves leading up to the opener but remained confident. “There’s always a buildup before the first game. I trust our group to handle it well on the pitch,” he said.
