A powerful New York snowstorm has brought the northeast United States to a standstill, prompting city officials to impose strict travel restrictions as heavy snow and strong winds sweep across the region. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered the shutdown of the city’s entire traffic network for all non-emergency travel, calling the storm one of the most severe in recent years.

The National Weather Service warned that blizzard conditions would rapidly develop from Maryland to southeastern New England, affecting nearly 54 million people. Snowfall rates could reach up to three inches per hour, with some areas expecting nearly two feet of snow. Visibility in parts of New York City dropped dramatically, with iconic skyscrapers barely visible through the thick snowfall.

Authorities fear widespread power outages due to heavy snow accumulation and wind gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour. In neighboring New Jersey, thousands of residents were already without electricity as the storm intensified. Officials across the region declared states of emergency to mobilize resources and ensure public safety.

New York City streets, highways, and bridges were ordered closed from Sunday night through Monday afternoon, except for essential travel. Residents were strongly urged to avoid unnecessary movement and prepare for extended indoor stays. Governor Kathy Hochul advised citizens to stock up on groceries, medicine, and other essentials before conditions worsen.

In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu announced the closure of public schools and municipal buildings. Meanwhile, forecasters also warned of potential coastal flooding from Delaware to Cape Cod, adding another layer of risk to the dangerous weather event.

Officials emphasized that the worst part of the storm may still lie ahead. Residents have been encouraged to remain indoors, stay warm, and prioritize safety as emergency crews work tirelessly to manage the crisis.
