Australian authorities have launched an urgent Lakemba Mosque Threat investigation after a disturbing letter containing violent and racist language was sent to the country’s largest mosque in Sydney’s west. The incident marks the third threatening message received by the mosque in the weeks leading up to Ramadan, raising serious concerns within the local Muslim community.
According to police, the letter included a drawing of a pig and a direct threat targeting the Muslim community. The correspondence was immediately seized for forensic testing, and officers have increased patrols around religious sites and community gatherings. With approximately 5,000 worshippers expected each night during Ramadan, security has become a pressing priority.
This is not the first alarming message directed at the mosque. Earlier letters reportedly depicted violent imagery, including Muslims inside a mosque engulfed in flames. Authorities have already arrested and charged a 70 year old man in connection with a separate threatening letter sent in January. Despite this arrest, tensions remain high.
The mosque is operated by the Lebanese Muslim Association, which has formally requested additional government funding to enhance security measures such as CCTV cameras and security personnel. Lakemba is home to a large Muslim population, with over 60 percent of residents identifying as Muslim, according to official statistics.
Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Bilal El Hayek described the atmosphere as deeply anxious, noting that some parents are reconsidering sending their children to mosque activities due to safety fears. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the threats, calling the intimidation unacceptable and urging a reduction in heated political rhetoric.
Reports indicate that anti Muslim sentiment in Australia has increased since late 2023, with advocacy groups documenting a sharp rise in incidents. Community leaders warn that restoring trust and safety will require decisive action and stronger protections during this sacred month.
