The Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct a new airport in Lahore, addressing the city’s increasing air traffic and easing the load on the Allama Iqbal International Airport.

According to provincial officials, the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has proposed a potential site near Ravi City, close to the M-3 Motorway, located about 30 kilometers from the existing airport. This site offers strategic advantages for future expansion and urban growth.

The project is currently in the planning and consultation phase, where discussions focus on funding models, construction costs, and partnerships. The government is exploring public-private partnership (PPP) opportunities to make the airport financially sustainable and operationally efficient.

Authorities expect that the new airport will significantly reduce congestion, improve passenger experience, and strengthen Lahore’s position as a major aviation hub. In addition, the project is projected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate tourism, and attract foreign investment into Punjab’s growing economy.

Although no official budget or timeline has been released yet, experts consider the initiative a key step in modernizing Punjab’s infrastructure and improving regional connectivity. If approved, the new Lahore airport could emerge as one of the province’s most transformative development projects in the coming decade.
