Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar has announced that the government is actively discussing two major political developments — an increase in Balochistan’s parliamentary seats and a proposal to rename Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as “Pukhtunkhwa.”
While speaking to the media, the minister shared that most clauses of the constitutional amendment bill have already been finalized, with only a few newly proposed suggestions still under review. He explained that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) have submitted their recommendations, which are being evaluated in the ongoing discussions.
The joint parliamentary session has been temporarily adjourned to allow political parties to consult their leadership before moving forward. Tarar also revealed that, on the direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the proposal to grant immunity to the Prime Minister has been officially withdrawn.
He further mentioned that the MQM’s suggestion for local government autonomy and the Punjab Assembly’s resolution on local governance were both discussed at length. These issues, he said, will require additional time for thorough review and consensus building before any decisions are finalized.
If approved, the renaming of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to “Pukhtunkhwa” would mark a significant political shift, reflecting regional identity and cultural sentiment in Pakistan’s evolving federal landscape.
