The Sindh cabinet has approved a major Karachi road repair package worth Rs8.53 billion to address the city’s deteriorating infrastructure. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, where key development proposals were reviewed and finalized. The road rehabilitation plan was presented by Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and endorsed by the provincial finance committee.

In addition to improving road conditions, the cabinet approved Rs7 billion in compensation for victims of the tragic Gul Plaza fire incident. The government also allocated Rs1.57 billion for the preservation of a historic building located on I.I. Chundrigar Road, reflecting a commitment to protecting the city’s architectural heritage.

Further financial approvals included a Rs5.20 billion grant for the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Rs560 million for the Sindh Police to enhance operations in riverine areas, and Rs900 million under Phase II of the Peoples IT Programme aimed at youth training and digital skills development.

During the meeting, the chief minister emphasized strict action against inflation during Ramadan, directing authorities to enforce price control measures. He instructed assistant commissioners to remain active in markets to ensure essential items are available at officially notified rates.

The cabinet’s decisions come shortly after President Asif Ali Zardari reportedly expressed strong concern over Karachi’s worsening condition. Sources indicated that both the president and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have held internal discussions in Karachi, urging immediate improvements. President Zardari has given the provincial government a three month deadline to deliver visible progress and reduce public complaints.

The newly approved funding is being viewed as a significant step toward restoring public confidence and accelerating development across Karachi.
