The city of Karachi recently experienced heavy rainfall, affecting multiple areas and prompting authorities to take urgent action. Several neighborhoods including Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, Saddar, and Sharea Faisal reported intense showers, while strong winds added to the challenging weather conditions.
Rainfall was also recorded in Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Malir, and Clifton, with thunderstorms reported near the airport and surrounding regions. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, wind speeds reached up to 47 km/h, contributing to traffic disruptions and water accumulation on key roads like Kashmir Road and Sharea Faisal.
Authorities quickly responded by activating emergency control rooms and deploying teams across the city. The Commissioner instructed all Deputy Commissioners to remain alert and ensure a swift response to emergencies. Citizens were advised to use the rescue helpline 1299 for assistance.
To manage the situation, Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon confirmed that additional de-watering pumps have been installed in low-lying areas. Staff have also been deployed at key congestion points to ensure smooth rainwater drainage and prevent urban flooding.
Weather data showed that the city recorded high humidity levels of 83%, with temperatures ranging between 23.5°C and 27°C. Rainfall measurements included 20.5 mm on the M-9 Motorway, along with varying levels in other areas like Surjani Town and Defence.
Experts highlighted that changing climate patterns have influenced rainfall trends in recent years. Interestingly, April rainfall has become less predictable, with no rain recorded last year in the city during this month.
Meanwhile, K-Electric issued safety guidelines, urging residents to avoid using electrical appliances in wet conditions and stay away from exposed wires. Power supply may be temporarily suspended in some areas to ensure public safety.
The government has reassured citizens that all available resources are being utilized to manage the situation effectively. Residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety precautions during this period of Karachi heavy rainfall.
