The United States President Donald Trump has announced a two week ceasefire with Iran, marking a dramatic shift in the escalating Middle East conflict. The decision came just hours before a critical deadline, following diplomatic intervention by Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint and dialogue.

Trump revealed that the ceasefire is conditional on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route. He described the agreement as a “double sided ceasefire”, emphasizing that major military objectives had already been achieved and progress toward a long term peace deal was well underway.

The sudden announcement came after earlier threats from Trump, where he warned of severe consequences if Iran failed to comply. However, ongoing diplomatic efforts led to a last minute breakthrough, giving both sides a two week window to finalize a comprehensive peace agreement.

According to Trump, Iran has presented a 10 point proposal, which the US considers a workable basis for negotiations. Most key issues between the two sides have reportedly been addressed, raising hopes for a lasting resolution.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have framed the development differently, calling it a strategic success for Tehran. They confirmed that negotiations with the United States will take place in Islamabad, facilitated by Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

The ceasefire has also been supported by Israel, which agreed to halt its military operations during this period. Iran, on its part, has signaled readiness to allow safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, provided attacks against it are stopped.

The conflict, now in its sixth week, has caused significant loss of life and economic disruption, particularly due to rising oil prices. With global markets under pressure, the ceasefire offers a crucial opportunity for diplomacy to restore stability.

This development highlights Pakistan’s growing role as a key mediator in international conflicts, with hopes that ongoing talks will lead to lasting peace in the region.
