Indonesia has issued a tsunami warning after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea, near the historic spice island of Ternate. The quake, initially reported as magnitude 7.8, occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers, triggering alerts across Southeast Asia.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the epicenter was about 120 kilometers from Ternate, a city with over 200,000 residents. Although no immediate casualties were reported, authorities warned of aftershocks reaching magnitudes of 5 and urged evacuation preparedness in vulnerable areas.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that hazardous tsunami waves between 0.3 to 1 meter could impact coastal regions within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter. Countries at risk include Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, with smaller waves expected in Guam, Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Taiwan.

In cities like Ternate and Tidore, local governments have begun preparing citizens for potential evacuations. Indonesian news outlet Metro TV aired footage of damaged buildings, adding urgency to the situation.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency noted that waves of up to 0.2 meters may reach its shores but are unlikely to cause damage. Meanwhile, the UAE, Malaysia, and other regional governments are monitoring developments closely.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense tectonic activity where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common. This latest quake underscores the region’s vulnerability and the importance of early warning systems.

Authorities continue to assess the situation, urging coastal communities to remain alert. While the quake’s depth may reduce the tsunami’s impact, the potential for disruption and damage remains high.

As the region braces for possible waves, emergency services are on standby, and residents are advised to follow official guidance to ensure safety.
