A senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf has stated that former prime minister Imran Khan does not want to secure his release through a political deal similar to the one associated with Nawaz Sharif. The remarks have intensified debate around the ongoing political standoff between PTI and the ruling coalition.
Speaking during a television programme, Barrister Umair Niazi said that negotiations of this nature require significant concessions. He referred to Nawaz Sharif’s past experience, explaining that the former prime minister had to step away from practical politics, leave the country, and sign an agreement as part of his release arrangement. According to Niazi, Imran Khan does not want to follow a similar path or compromise his political stance.
The comments come as Imran Khan has remained in prison for over two years. During this period, PTI has organized protests and attempted multiple negotiation rounds with the government. However, talks mediated by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in early 2025 ended without results after disagreements over judicial commissions related to key events in 2023 and 2024.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has strongly rejected reports of any potential agreement. He stated that there is no deal or concession under discussion regarding Imran Khan and dismissed such claims as baseless. The government maintains that legal matters will proceed through the courts without political interference.
Meanwhile, PTI leaders have hinted at renewed mobilization efforts after Ramadan. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa officials have spoken about forming a peaceful release force aimed at advocating for Imran Khan’s freedom. Party representatives insist that any future movement will remain lawful and organized.
The issue of Imran Khan’s imprisonment continues to dominate national politics, especially amid concerns about his health and legal proceedings. With both sides maintaining firm positions, the political landscape remains tense and uncertain.
