The International Cricket Council has responded to Pakistan’s decision to skip its match against India in the T20 World Cup 2026, urging the Pakistan Cricket Board to work toward a solution that protects the integrity of global cricket. While Pakistan has been cleared to participate in the tournament, the government has denied permission for the national team to take the field against India on February 15, 2026.

In an official statement, the ICC said it had taken note of the government’s stance but was still awaiting formal communication from the PCB. The cricket governing body stressed that selective participation is difficult to justify in an international tournament where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms and according to a fixed schedule.

The ICC warned that skipping a single match undermines the spirit, fairness, and competitive balance of global events. It noted that international competitions are built on principles of sporting integrity, consistency, and equality, and any deviation from these principles could weaken the credibility of the tournament.

While acknowledging that governments have authority over national policy decisions, the ICC said the move was not in the best interest of the global game or cricket fans worldwide, including millions of supporters in Pakistan. The statement emphasized that Pakistan itself is a key stakeholder and beneficiary of the international cricket ecosystem.

The ICC further urged the PCB to reflect on the long term consequences of the decision, warning that it could have lasting effects on Pakistan’s standing in international cricket. According to the governing body, decisions taken at this level do not exist in isolation and may influence future scheduling, participation, and cooperation within the sport.

Reiterating its primary objective, the ICC said its focus remains the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. It added that ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament is a shared responsibility of all member boards, including Pakistan.

Pakistan’s decision followed a high level meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. In an official post, the government confirmed approval for tournament participation but clearly stated that the team will not play against India.

As discussions continue, the ICC has made it clear that it hopes for a mutually acceptable resolution that preserves the unity and credibility of international cricket.
