A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck western Turkey on October 28, 2025, spreading fear across multiple cities. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake’s epicenter was in Sindirgi, located in Balikesir province, at a shallow depth of nearly six kilometers.

The tremors were widely felt in Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, causing panic among residents as people rushed into the streets. Authorities confirmed that three previously damaged buildings and a two-story shop collapsed, while at least 22 individuals sustained injuries, mostly due to panic and falls. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.

Emergency response units were immediately deployed to the affected regions, with local authorities setting up temporary shelters in mosques, schools, and sports complexes to accommodate displaced residents. Many spent the night outdoors as aftershocks continued to rattle the area.

Sindirgi has faced similar seismic activity before, including a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in August, raising concerns about the region’s seismic vulnerability. Experts have urged residents to stay alert and adhere to safety guidelines in case of further tremors.

In a show of solidarity, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar expressed condolences and support for Turkey’s relief and recovery efforts, reaffirming the strong friendship between the two nations. Turkish authorities are continuing damage assessments and ensuring aid reaches all affected citizens.
