A tragic incident in Rahim Yar Khan has exposed serious concerns about public safety during aid distribution, as at least eight women lost their lives and more than 80 others were injured when a shop roof collapsed during a BISP cash payout.
The incident occurred in Chak 123P, where a large number of women had gathered to receive financial assistance under the Benazir Income Support Programme ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Due to severe overcrowding, the situation quickly became dangerous. Reports indicate that more than 100 women were present at the site, with some standing on the roof while others remained inside the shop.
According to officials, the roof could not bear the weight of the crowd and suddenly collapsed, trapping dozens of women under the debris. Rescue teams and police rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where many victims were reported to have serious injuries, including fractures and head trauma.
Authorities have registered a case and named five individuals, including a private retailer’s device agent, who has been held responsible for the negligence that led to the disaster. This incident highlights a recurring issue in Pakistan where overcrowding at welfare distribution points continues to put lives at risk, especially during Ramadan.
Government officials, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. They directed authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured, conduct a thorough investigation, and enforce strict safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This heartbreaking event has once again raised serious questions about crowd management, infrastructure safety, and the urgent need for better planning during welfare distributions. Experts warn that without proper arrangements and monitoring, vulnerable people will continue to face life-threatening risks while seeking essential financial aid.
