BBC YouTube Deal to Launch Exclusive Shows

The BBC is set to produce exclusive bespoke shows for YouTube under a new content agreement, marking a significant shift in strategy for the British public broadcaster. This will be the first time the BBC creates original programmes designed explicitly for YouTube audiences, with the duplicate content also available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds. The deal is expected to be finalised and officially announced next week.

By expanding onto YouTube, the BBC aims to generate additional revenue, particularly through advertising on content viewed outside the UK. While BBC programmes remain ad-free on third-party platforms within the UK, international distribution offers a new income stream beyond the licence fee, which remains the broadcaster’s primary source of funding.

This move represents a significant departure from traditional distribution, as the BBC has historically focused on its own platforms such as BBC One, BBC Two, and iPlayer, using YouTube mainly for trailers and promotional clips. The new agreement signals a clear intent to adapt to changing viewing habits.

The upcoming YouTube-focused shows will primarily target younger audiences, similar to content produced for BBC Three, alongside children’s programming, sports content, and new digital news formats aimed at tackling misinformation on social media.

The deal comes at a time when YouTube’s UK viewership surpassed the BBC in late 2025, underlining the growing influence of digital platforms. As audience behaviour evolves, the BBC’s move highlights the pressure on traditional broadcasters to innovate and diversify their reach.
