The vibrant spirit of Basant has officially returned to Lahore, and the excitement is clearly reflected in the booming markets. Ahead of the long-awaited festival, Basant Lahore sales have crossed Rs540 million, highlighting massive public enthusiasm as the city prepares to celebrate after a gap of nearly 25 years.
According to the Kite Association, more than 500,000 kites were sold in Lahore markets on Tuesday alone. This surge in buying activity continued for the third consecutive day, with designated markets remaining packed as families and kite flyers stocked up on colourful kites and string. Popular areas such as Mochi Gate witnessed heavy footfall, where shoppers browsed a wide variety of kites amid a lively festive atmosphere.
The celebrations are scheduled to take place from February 6 to 8, following the lifting of a long-standing ban under strict safety conditions. The district administration added to the festive mood by arranging a Basant float, with traditional dhol beats energising crowds and adding charm to the shopping experience.
However, not all feedback has been positive. Some citizens expressed concern over the high prices of kites and string, urging the government to step in and regulate rates to make celebrations more accessible for everyone.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb visited Mochi Gate to review arrangements and assured the public that all preparations for a safe Basant have been completed. She strongly urged citizens to follow SOPs to ensure safety during the festivities.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a major Basant celebration at Liberty Chowk on February 7, where a giant decorative kite has already been installed. The Punjab government has also declared a two-day public holiday on February 6 and 7, further boosting public participation.
The Punjab cabinet has allowed the manufacturing of kite flying material in Lahore and four other districts, while officials confirmed that foolproof security arrangements are in place.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, weather conditions from February 6 to 8 will remain cold, dry, and suitable for kite flying, with moderate winds. The Met Office has advised citizens to stay away from electricity wires while enjoying the festival.
