Punjab is set to celebrate the vibrant return of Basant as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a provincial holiday on February 6, giving citizens across the province an opportunity to enjoy the long awaited festival. The announcement has added to the growing excitement in Lahore and other cities as preparations intensify for the colourful celebrations.

Sharing the news on social media, CM Maryam said Punjab would enjoy a long weekend, with Kashmir Day on February 5, followed by the Basant holiday on February 6, and then Saturday and Sunday. She expressed hope that people would use this time to relax, recharge, and fully enjoy the festive break with their families.

The decision comes after the Punjab government lifted a 25 year ban on kite flying, allowing Basant celebrations under strict safety conditions. The move has been widely welcomed, as Basant holds deep cultural significance in Punjab and has long been associated with kite flying, music, colours, and communal joy.

Across Lahore, preparations are in full swing ahead of the festival, which will be celebrated from February 6 to February 8. Markets are bustling, rooftops are being prepared, and the city is slowly transforming into a sea of colour. Many citizens, especially youngsters, are eagerly awaiting their first chance to experience Basant after decades.

Provincial departments have actively joined the celebrations. The Lahore administration has decorated public transport buses with Basant themed artwork to reflect the festive mood. Speedo and green electric buses have been adorned with Punjab inspired colours and cultural imagery, adding charm to daily travel.

To encourage public participation, the Punjab government has also announced free travel on the metro bus, Orange Line, Speedo, and electric bus services across Lahore during the festival days. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and allow families to move around the city easily.

Meanwhile, to ensure safety, the Lahore deputy commissioner has formed quick response teams in every tehsil. These teams will handle monitoring, emergency response, and public safety, ensuring celebrations remain peaceful and well managed.

With official support, safety measures, and a public holiday in place, Basant in Punjab is shaping up to be a memorable cultural revival after a long gap.
