Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam is once again facing intense scrutiny following his performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. During the crucial Super Eights clash against England at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Babar managed just 25 runs off 24 balls, striking at 104 before being dismissed by Jamie Overton. The innings has reignited debate over his suitability in modern T20 cricket.

Speaking on Geo News program “Harna Mana Hai,” former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif openly questioned Babar’s place in the shortest format. He stated that Babar is “no longer a player of this format” and criticized the decision to bring him back into the squad after earlier concerns about his strike rate. Latif pointed out that team management had previously claimed Babar would return once his scoring tempo improved. According to him, there has been little visible change.

Latif also emphasized that modern T20 demands aggression, adaptability, and the ability to shift gears quickly. When a batter consumes 20 to 25 deliveries without accelerating, it increases pressure on partners and forces incoming players to take unnecessary risks. He stressed that set batters must take responsibility and guide the chase with authority.

Cricketer Ahmed Shehzad echoed similar concerns, highlighting missed opportunities for quick singles and doubles. He also questioned Babar’s struggle against quality leg spin, particularly referencing his difficulty reading a delivery from Adil Rashid. Meanwhile, fast bowler Mohammad Amir agreed that Babar failed to properly pick the variation.

The discussion reflects growing concern over Pakistan’s batting tempo and strategic approach. As the T20 format continues to evolve, experts believe stronger intent, smarter strike rotation, and calculated risk taking are essential for success at the highest level.
