The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is preparing for a crucial moment as lawmakers gather today to vote on a no confidence motion against Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq. The special session, scheduled for 3pm and chaired by Speaker Latif Akbar, is expected to determine the region’s next political direction.
The Pakistan Peoples Party, strengthened by recent political gains, has nominated Faisal Rathore as its candidate for the top post. Backed by the PML N, the PPP claims to have secured 37 members, well above the 27 votes needed for a simple majority. Strict security has been enforced around the Assembly Secretariat, ensuring only authorized individuals can enter.
PPP’s political momentum increased after 10 former PTI lawmakers joined the party, boosting its position in the House. Meanwhile, the PML N supports the no-trust move but has opted not to become part of the new government.
The political landscape shifted further when the PTI lost its official registration, turning its members into independents, allowing 28 of them to align with PPP and PML N without violating the floor-crossing rule.
If the motion succeeds, Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore is set to become the 16th Prime Minister of AJK, marking another significant chapter in the region’s long history of no confidence votes.
