Pakistan has warned the United Nations Security Council that terrorism from Afghanistan continues to pose a serious and growing threat to regional and global stability. Speaking during a UN meeting on Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad stressed that militant groups operating from Afghan territory are responsible for increasing violence in the region.
According to the ambassador, elements within the Taliban regime have allegedly shown complicity and support for several terrorist organisations. These groups include the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army, Majeed Brigade, Daesh Khorasan, Al-Qaeda, and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. He said these organisations continue to find safe havens inside Afghanistan, from where they organise cross border attacks, suicide bombings, and infiltration operations targeting Pakistan.
Ambassador Ahmad explained that Pakistan has consistently tried to support peace and stability in Afghanistan by encouraging dialogue and cooperation with the Taliban authorities. Islamabad has also provided humanitarian assistance, trade incentives, and relaxed visa policies to help Afghanistan strengthen regional economic integration.
Despite these efforts, he said the Taliban government has failed to meet key international expectations outlined under the Doha Process, particularly regarding counter terrorism, protection of human rights, and the creation of an inclusive political system.
Pakistan has suffered heavily due to the rise in attacks. The ambassador revealed that the country has lost thousands of lives since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. In just the previous month, more than 175 people were killed, including victims of multiple suicide bombings.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s defensive military operations along the border. In February, Pakistan carried out precision intelligence based strikes against seven terrorist camps belonging to the TTP and ISIL K in border regions. Following those actions, Taliban forces reportedly responded with cross border firing and shelling of Pakistani military posts.
Ambassador Ahmad stated that Pakistan’s responses were conducted strictly under its right to self defence and were carefully targeted at terrorist infrastructure.
He concluded by urging the Taliban authorities to ensure Afghan territory is not used by militant groups against neighbouring countries. According to Pakistan, lasting peace in the region depends on eliminating terrorist safe havens inside Afghanistan.
