ISLAMABAD: On Monday, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, announced that the 28th Constitutional Amendment would soon be presented to Parliament. He expressed confidence that the amendment would also be passed by the legislative body.

Speaking to reporters in Chiniot, Sanaullah stated that the proposed amendment would address issues related to local bodies, the National Finance Commission (NFC), and health, adding that discussions on these topics were already underway.

He emphasized that if a consensus is reached, the government would proceed with formally introducing the 28th Amendment in Parliament.

These remarks followed the recent passage of the 27th Amendment by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led ruling coalition, which introduced changes to the judicial structure and military command.

During his interaction with the media, Sanaullah also commented on the resignations of two Supreme Court judges and one from the Lahore High Court (LHC), asserting that Parliament has the constitutional right to pass amendments, while judges have sworn to uphold and protect these decisions.

Sanaullah remarked that it was unbecoming of judges to participate in political protests, adding, “Those who resigned did so for personal reasons.”

Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah resigned from their posts in separate letters to President Asif Ali Zardari, sharply criticizing the 27th Amendment.

The judges had condemned the 27th Amendment, calling it a “serious assault on the Constitution of Pakistan.” However, the federal government dismissed the judges’ resignations as “political speeches” and termed their allegations as “unconstitutional.”

Two days later, LHC judge Shams Mehmood Mirza followed suit and resigned from his position, protesting against the newly-enacted 27th Amendment.
