Karachi Extortion Network run by foreign-based gangsters has come under fresh scrutiny after the city’s police chief revealed ongoing operations targeting industrialists and traders. Additional Inspector General of Karachi Police Azad Khan shared the details during a visit to the SITE Association of Industry on Monday, assuring business leaders that the force is treating the matter with full seriousness.
The port city has seen a noticeable rise in extortion cases over the past two weeks. Many incidents involve threatening international phone calls and direct attacks on business premises, creating fear among builders and traders. According to the police chief, Interpol Red Notices have already been issued against five key gangsters, which has led them to reduce their activities for the time being.
Azad Khan confirmed that phone numbers and other identifying details of these overseas operators have been shared with the relevant foreign countries for further action. He also highlighted a recent successful crackdown against the Samad Kathiawari group. The officer made it clear that no leniency would be shown to those terrorising citizens through extortion.
Emphasising the importance of economic security, the Karachi police chief warned that a weakening economy fuels unemployment and further crime. He noted that police personnel have made significant sacrifices to restore peace in the metropolis and vowed to protect it at all costs. Azad Khan, who grew up in the city, stated that he is personally monitoring the situation and remains committed to continuous improvement.
On the positive side, he reported a 25 percent reduction in the rate of vehicle and motorcycle snatching. The number of murders committed during robberies has also declined. While these results show progress, the police chief stressed that more work remains to be done. He appealed to industrialists for continued support, pointing out that the Sindh police themselves face resource challenges, including the inability to purchase new vehicles this year.
The latest disclosures about the Karachi Extortion Network underline the complex nature of organised crime that spans international borders. Authorities continue coordinated efforts to dismantle these groups and restore confidence among the business community in the country’s economic hub.
