ISLAMABAD: Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Pakistan on an official visit, accompanied by a high level delegation to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss important regional matters. The visit reflects the continued commitment of both neighboring countries to enhance cooperation in trade, security, and diplomatic relations.
Upon his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warmly welcomed his Iranian counterpart. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam were also present to receive the visiting delegation.
The Iranian delegation includes the Governor General of Sistan and Baluchestan, senior officials from Iran’s Interior Ministry, representatives from the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), transport authorities, and agriculture officials.
Speaking to the media, Eskandar Momeni said his visit is focused on further strengthening the long standing friendship between Pakistan and Iran while expanding cooperation in multiple sectors. He highlighted that both countries had previously agreed to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion, although current trade stands at approximately $3 billion.
The Iranian minister explained that achieving the trade target would require significant improvements in border infrastructure and transportation. He noted that nearly 2,000 trucks would need to cross the border daily, while only about 20% of the required commercial activity is currently taking place.
Later, Mohsin Naqvi and Eskandar Momeni held detailed discussions on bilateral relations, border cooperation, and regional developments. Momeni praised Pakistan’s hospitality and described the relationship between the two countries as exemplary. Naqvi expressed optimism that the visit would further strengthen cooperation and contribute to positive progress on regional issues.
During his stay, Momeni is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
The visit comes at a time of heightened regional tensions involving Iran and the United States, making diplomatic engagement and regional stability an important focus of discussions between the two neighboring nations.
