Belgium will face one of their toughest tests of the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they take on Spain in a highly anticipated quarter final on Friday. The Belgian side must find a way to break through Spain’s remarkable defensive record, with the European champions yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

Spain continued their impressive run by defeating Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16, recording a historic sixth consecutive World Cup clean sheet. While they have not been the tournament’s highest scoring team, their disciplined style of football, built around possession and defensive organization, has made them one of the strongest title contenders.

Young star Lamine Yamal remains one of Spain’s biggest attacking threats despite recovering from an injury before the tournament. Although he has scored only once in five matches, his pace and creativity continue to trouble opposing defenses. Meanwhile, Mikel Oyarzabal has stepped up brilliantly with four goals, including a match winning brace against Austria.

Midfielder Dani Olmo praised Yamal’s influence, explaining that the teenager attracts multiple defenders whenever he receives the ball, creating valuable space for teammates. Spain’s defensive unit has also been outstanding, allowing only six shots on target throughout the competition, with goalkeeper Unai Simon playing a vital role.

Belgium, however, have shown resilience and attacking quality during their knockout campaign. They recovered from behind to defeat Senegal before producing an impressive 4-1 victory over co hosts United States. Charles De Ketelaere starred with two first half goals, while Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to add another.

Captain Youri Tielemans, midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, winger Jeremy Doku, striker Romelu Lukaku, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois provide Belgium with plenty of experience and world class talent. Lukaku has already scored three goals in the tournament and continues to climb the list of the World Cup’s all time leading scorers.

With a place in the World Cup semi finals at stake, football fans can expect a fascinating battle between Belgium’s attacking firepower and Spain’s rock solid defence.
