UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA after the world football governing body suspended Folarin Balogun’s automatic one match ban, allowing the United States forward to feature in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash against Belgium. The decision has sparked widespread debate and raised questions about fairness and consistency in international football.

Balogun was initially handed a straight red card during the United States’ 2 to 0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. After a video review, the referee ruled that the striker had stepped on an opponent’s foot, resulting in an automatic one match suspension under FIFA regulations.

However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later announced that the suspension would be placed on hold for a one year probationary period, making Balogun eligible to play against Belgium. The organization did not provide a detailed explanation for the unexpected decision.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging him to reconsider the punishment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly supported removing the suspension. Following the announcement, Trump praised FIFA on social media, describing the decision as correcting an injustice.

UEFA reacted sharply, stating that FIFA had “crossed a red line” by altering a rule that was clear and not open to interpretation. The European governing body stressed that football depends on transparent and consistent rules that apply equally to every team and player. UEFA warned that such decisions could damage the integrity of the sport and create long term consequences for international competitions.

Belgium also expressed frustration ahead of the knockout match. Head coach Rudi Garcia sarcastically compared the ruling to April Fool’s Day, suggesting that the decision was difficult to believe.

The controversy has become one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with fans, analysts, and football officials closely watching how FIFA responds to growing criticism over its disciplinary process.
