Naomi Osaka produced one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon 2026 by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her career. The Japanese star delivered an outstanding performance to secure a 6-2, 7-6(2) victory on Centre Court.

The highly anticipated fourth round clash featured two former Grand Slam champions, but Osaka dominated from the beginning. She controlled the opening set with aggressive returning and consistent baseline play, leaving Sabalenka struggling to find her rhythm.

The second set was far more competitive as Sabalenka fought back, but Osaka remained composed in the tiebreak. She ended Sabalenka’s remarkable streak of 21 consecutive Grand Slam tiebreak victories, sealing one of the biggest wins since returning to professional tennis after becoming a mother in 2024.

Following the defeat, Sabalenka admitted her disappointment and joked that she wanted to “get drunk and forget about tennis.” The Belarusian star acknowledged that Osaka played fearless tennis and deserved the victory.

Osaka said the match was one of the most enjoyable experiences of her comeback. She expressed her happiness at finally defeating Sabalenka after losing their previous three meetings and said winning on Centre Court made the moment even more special.

The victory leaves the women’s draw wide open after several top seeds were eliminated during the opening week. Osaka will now face Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals as she continues her bid for a maiden Wimbledon title.

With her confidence growing and her powerful game perfectly suited to the occasion, Osaka has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the championship. Her impressive display against the tournament’s top seed has reignited hopes of adding a fifth Grand Slam title to her remarkable career.
